Português is the one exam every student on a curso científico-humanístico sits: the Exame Nacional 639, at the end of 12.º ano, on the Aprendizagens Essenciais of all three years. It assesses reading, writing, literary education and grammar, ending with a 200-to-350-word text. These lessons cover the three years and the exam.

Do you prepare for the Exame Nacional de Português (639)?
Yes. The exam covers the Aprendizagens Essenciais of 10.º, 11.º and 12.º ano, and preparation works through past papers with their marking criteria.
Is the Português exam compulsory?
For students on the cursos científico-humanísticos, yes: the Guia Geral de Exames 2026 lists Português among the national exams needed to finish secondary school.
