Key Stage 3 chemistry, Years 7 to 9
The chemistry part of Key Stage 3 science — one-to-one and online, with the particle model made solid before GCSE begins.
What this covers in detail
The particulate nature of matter
The properties of solids, liquids and gases, and changes of state, explained with the particle model.
Atoms, elements and compounds
A simple atomic model, elements and compounds, chemical symbols and formulae, and conservation of mass.
Pure and impure substances
Pure substances and mixtures, dissolving, diffusion, and separating by filtration, evaporation, distillation and chromatography.
Chemical reactions
Reactions as rearrangements of atoms, combustion, thermal decomposition, oxidation and displacement, acids and alkalis, the pH scale and catalysts.
Energetics
Energy changes on changes of state, and exothermic and endothermic reactions.
The periodic table
Properties of elements, periods and groups, metals and non-metals, and the properties of their oxides.
Materials
The reactivity series, using carbon to extract metals, and ceramics, polymers and composites.
Earth and atmosphere
The structure of the Earth, the rock cycle, resources and recycling, the composition of the atmosphere, and carbon dioxide and climate.
At Key Stage 3, science is taught as biology, chemistry and physics. The chemistry content covers eight areas, and almost all of it rests on one idea: matter is made of particles. Pupils who are secure in that idea find GCSE Chemistry far easier. These lessons follow the school’s scheme of work and build it carefully.
What this covers
The particle model first
Almost every later topic depends on it. It is taught until the pupil can use it to explain, not just describe.
Working scientifically
Planning investigations, handling data and drawing conclusions are practised, as the curriculum asks.
Ready for GCSE
Symbols, formulae and equations are introduced at Key Stage 3. Secure here, they stop being an obstacle in Year 10.

Common questions
Is chemistry a separate subject at Key Stage 3?
It is one of the three sciences within science. Some schools teach the three separately, others as one course; lessons follow how your school does it.
My child is at a British school abroad. Does this fit?
Yes. British international schools generally follow the same national curriculum; lessons follow your school’s scheme of work.
