GCSE maths, Foundation and Higher
The six content areas every exam board examines — one-to-one and online, at the tier the student is entered for, with past papers from the start.
What this covers in detail
Number
Calculation with integers, fractions, decimals and standard form, and accuracy. Higher tier adds surds and bounds.
Algebra
Expressions, formulae, graphs, sequences and equations, including quadratics and simultaneous equations. Higher tier goes further with functions.
Ratio, proportion and rates of change
Ratio, percentages, direct and inverse proportion, compound measures, and growth and decay.
Geometry and measures
Properties of shapes, area and volume, Pythagoras’ theorem, trigonometry and vectors. Higher tier adds circle theorems and the sine rule.
Probability
Probabilities of single and combined events, with tree diagrams. Higher tier adds conditional probability.
Statistics
Sampling, charts and diagrams, averages and spread, and scatter graphs. Higher tier adds histograms and cumulative frequency.
GCSE maths content is set by the Department for Education and is the same for every exam board. Students sit either Foundation tier (grades 1 to 5) or Higher tier (grades 4 to 9). These lessons work through the content at the right tier and practise it on past papers from the student’s own board.
What this covers
The right tier
Foundation and Higher overlap at grades 4 and 5. The assessment helps judge which tier gives the best chance of the grade needed.
Your exam board’s papers
The content is shared, but each board has its own paper style. Practice uses the board the school has entered.
With and without a calculator
AQA, for example, sets three papers of 1 hour 30 minutes, the first without a calculator. Both kinds of paper are practised.

Common questions
Which exam boards do you cover?
AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and WJEC Eduqas. The subject content is common to all of them.
Is GCSE maths changing?
Updated GCSEs are planned for first teaching from 2029, after a new national curriculum starts in September 2028. Students sitting exams before then follow the current content.
