Key Stage 3 physics, Years 7 to 9
The physics part of Key Stage 3 science — one-to-one and online, with the ideas made clear before GCSE begins.
What this covers in detail
Energy
Fuels and energy costs, power ratings, energy transfers by heating, conduction and radiation, simple machines, and conservation of energy.
Motion and forces
Speed and distance–time graphs, forces and force diagrams, balanced and unbalanced forces, moments, Hooke’s law, and pressure in fluids.
Waves
Water waves, sound — frequency, echoes and hearing — and light: reflection, refraction, lenses, the eye and colour.
Electricity and electromagnetism
Current, potential difference and resistance, series and parallel circuits, static electricity, magnets, electromagnets and motors.
Matter
Changes of state, the particle model, density, diffusion and Brownian motion, and internal energy.
Space physics
Gravity and weight, the Sun and other stars, the seasons and day length, and the light year.
At Key Stage 3, science is taught as biology, chemistry and physics. The physics content covers six areas, from energy to space. Pupils who understand these ideas — rather than remembering them — find GCSE Physics far easier. These lessons follow the school’s scheme of work and build that understanding.
What this covers
Ideas before formulas
Each topic starts from what is physically happening, so the equations describe something already understood.
Working scientifically
Planning investigations, handling data and drawing conclusions are practised, as the curriculum asks.
Ready for GCSE
Every GCSE Physics topic starts from a Key Stage 3 idea. A solid base here makes Years 10 and 11 much easier.

Common questions
Is physics a separate subject at Key Stage 3?
It is one of the three sciences within science. Some schools teach the three separately, others as one course; lessons follow how your school does it.
Is the maths difficult?
It is mostly proportion, units and reading graphs. Those are reinforced as the physics needs them.
