GCSE Chemistry, separate or Combined Science
The chemistry every exam board examines — one-to-one and online, for the separate GCSE or the chemistry within Combined Science.
What this covers in detail
Atomic structure and the Periodic Table
A simple model of the atom, relative atomic mass and isotopes, the modern Periodic Table, and the properties of transition metals.
Structure, bonding and the properties of matter
Chemical bonds and intermolecular forces, the structure and bonding of carbon, and bulk and surface properties, including nanoparticles.
Chemical changes
Symbols, formulae and equations, identifying common gases, the chemistry of acids, and redox reactions.
Energy changes in chemistry
Exothermic and endothermic reactions and reaction profiles, carbon compounds as fuels and feedstock, and chemical cells and fuel cells.
The rate and extent of chemical change
What affects the rate of a reaction, including catalysts, and reversible reactions and dynamic equilibrium.
Organic chemistry
Simple reactions of alkanes, alkenes and alcohols, and synthetic and naturally occurring polymers.
Chemical analysis
Purity and separating mixtures, amount of substance and the mole, concentrations of solutions, and identifying ions.
Chemical and allied industries
Life cycle assessment and recycling, fractional distillation of crude oil and cracking, using materials, fertilisers, and yield and atom economy.
Earth and atmospheric science
Carbon dioxide and methane as greenhouse gases, atmospheric pollutants, and water resources and potable water.
At GCSE, students take chemistry either as its own GCSE or as part of Combined Science, a double award covering biology, chemistry and physics. The content is set by the Department for Education for all exam boards, and both routes have Foundation and Higher tiers. These lessons follow the route, tier and board the student is on.
What this covers
Separate or Combined
Lessons follow the course the student is actually taking — and cover the extra content if they are doing separate Chemistry.
The mole, made routine
Amount-of-substance calculations are where most marks are lost. They are practised until the method is automatic.
Your exam board’s papers
The content is shared across boards; paper styles differ. Practice uses the board and tier the school has entered.

Choose the support that fits.
One-to-one tutoring, from a single session to consistent weekly progress.
Your first 30 minutes are free.
Start with a free 30-minute assessment. We will understand what the student needs and recommend the right plan.
Every plan includes live one-to-one lessons.
The Noktua practice platform is free with every account — even if you have not booked a lesson yet.
Lessons at the student's home carry an extra charge of €10/hour.
Common questions
Is Combined Science a weaker option?
No. It covers the same ideas in less depth and counts as two GCSEs. Students can still go on to A-Level Chemistry from it, depending on the school’s entry requirements.
Which exam boards do you cover?
AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and WJEC Eduqas. The chemistry content is common to all of them.
