AP Precalculus, course and exam
Functions in depth — the course that prepares for AP Calculus. One-to-one and online, with the AP Exam in view from the start.
What this covers in detail
Unit 1: Polynomial and Rational Functions
Rates of change, zeros, end behavior, asymptotes and holes, and modeling with polynomial and rational functions.
Unit 2: Exponential and Logarithmic Functions
Sequences, exponential and logarithmic functions and their inverses, equations, and modeling data.
Unit 3: Trigonometric and Polar Functions
Periodic phenomena, sine, cosine and tangent, inverse trigonometric functions, and polar coordinates and graphs.
Unit 4: Functions Involving Parameters, Vectors, and Matrices
Taught in many schools but not assessed on the AP Exam: parametric functions, vectors and matrices.
AP Precalculus is about understanding functions well enough to model with them: how they change, how to build them and how to justify a conclusion. The exam rewards explanation as much as calculation. These lessons practice both.
What this covers
Units 1–3 are the exam
The AP Exam assesses the first three units. Preparation concentrates there, and supports Unit 4 for the class grade.
Explaining, not just solving
Free-response questions ask for reasoning in words. Lessons practice writing answers that earn the points.
Calculator and no-calculator
The exam has parts with and without a graphing calculator. Both are practiced.

Common questions
Is AP Precalculus needed before AP Calculus?
A precalculus course is — AP or not. AP Precalculus is a strong preparation for Calculus AB or BC.
Do you prepare for the AP Exam?
Yes — with released questions, timed practice and the digital Bluebook format.
