IB MYP Mathematics, years 1 to 5
Standard and extended mathematics across the Middle Years Programme — one-to-one, in English or Portuguese, built around how the MYP actually assesses: four criteria, not just test scores.
What this covers in detail
Numerical and abstract reasoning
Number and algebra: working with numbers, expressions, equations and sequences, and reasoning about them in general terms.
Thinking with models
Functions and relationships: representing situations with linear, quadratic and other models, and interpreting what they say.
Spatial reasoning
Geometry and trigonometry: shapes, measurement, transformations, coordinate geometry and right-angled trigonometry.
Reasoning with data
Statistics and probability: collecting and representing data, summary statistics, and calculating and interpreting probabilities.
MYP maths is graded on four criteria, and knowing the content is only one of them. Students also have to investigate patterns, communicate their reasoning and apply maths to real situations — tasks that school tests alone rarely prepare them for. These lessons cover the maths and the way it is assessed, and build towards DP Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation.
What this covers
All four criteria
Knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying maths in real-life contexts — each one practised, because each one is 8 of the 32 points.
Standard or extended
Lessons follow the level the student takes, and prepare extended students for the extra topics their course adds.
Ready for the DP
MYP years 4 and 5 are where the choice between DP Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation is made. Lessons help make it and prepare for it.

Common questions
My child scores well in tests but not in the investigation tasks. Can you help?
Yes — that is usually criterion B (investigating patterns) or D (real-life contexts). Those tasks have a structure, and it can be taught.
Do you prepare for MYP eAssessment?
Yes, for schools that register their students for the on-screen examination in year 5.
