IB Maths: Applications and Interpretation, SL and HL
The DP course built on modelling, statistics and technology — one-to-one, online or in person around Lisbon, with the GDC and the exploration in view from the start.
What this covers in detail
Number and algebra
Approximation and errors, sequences, exponents and logarithms, and financial mathematics. HL adds complex numbers and matrices.
Functions
Modelling with linear, quadratic, exponential and sinusoidal functions, and choosing the model that fits the data. HL adds further models.
Geometry and trigonometry
3D geometry, trigonometry and Voronoi diagrams. HL adds vectors and graph theory.
Statistics and probability
Data collection, descriptive statistics, regression, probability, the normal distribution and hypothesis testing. HL adds further statistical tests and probability models.
Calculus
Differentiation and integration applied to rates of change, optimisation and areas. HL adds differential equations and slope fields.
Applications and Interpretation is the DP maths course for students heading towards the social sciences, business, biology and design. It is about using maths on real data and real situations, with technology throughout — and interpreting what the answer means. These lessons build that, at SL or HL.
What this covers
Technology, used well
The graphing calculator is used throughout the course. Lessons make it a fast, reliable tool rather than a source of wrong answers.
Interpretation earns the marks
Many AI marks are for explaining what a result means in context. That writing is practised on every problem.
The exploration, done properly
The internal assessment is a written mathematical exploration — often built on real data in AI. Lessons help choose a workable topic; the writing stays the student’s.

Common questions
Is AI the easier option?
No — it is a different course. It has less algebra and more modelling and statistics, and HL is demanding. It suits some students much better than AA.
Is the course changing?
Yes. The current course is examined for the last time in November 2028, and revised courses start in August 2027. Lessons follow whichever guide the student is on.
