IB Chemistry, SL and HL
The Structure and Reactivity framework of the current DP Chemistry guide — one-to-one, online or in person around Lisbon, with the internal assessment and exam papers in view.
What this covers in detail
Structure 1 — Models of the particulate nature of matter
The particulate nature of matter, the nuclear atom, electron configurations, the mole and ideal gases.
Structure 2 — Models of bonding and structure
The ionic, covalent and metallic models, and how models explain materials.
Structure 3 — Classification of matter
The periodic table and periodicity, and functional groups in organic compounds.
Reactivity 1 — What drives chemical reactions?
Measuring enthalpy changes, energy cycles and energy from fuels. HL adds entropy and spontaneity.
Reactivity 2 — How much, how fast and how far?
Amounts in reactions, rates of reaction and chemical equilibrium.
Reactivity 3 — What are the mechanisms of chemical change?
Proton transfer (acids and bases), electron transfer (redox), electron sharing and electron-pair sharing reactions.
The current DP Chemistry guide, first examined in 2025, replaced the old topic list with two linked ideas: structure determines reactivity, and reactivity transforms structure. It is a better way to learn chemistry, but it asks students to connect topics rather than learn them one by one. These lessons make those connections explicit.
What this covers
Structure and reactivity, connected
Each reaction topic is tied back to the structure that explains it — the link the new guide is built on and exam questions test.
The scientific investigation
The IA is worth 20% at SL and HL. Lessons help design a sound investigation and process its data — the work stays the student’s.
Calculations that stop going wrong
Moles, energetics and equilibrium calculations practised until the method is automatic.

Your first 30 minutes are free.
Start with a free 30-minute assessment. We will understand what the student needs and recommend the right plan.
Every plan includes live one-to-one lessons.
The Noktua practice platform is free with every account — even if you have not booked a lesson yet.
Lessons at the student's home carry an extra charge of €10/hour.
Common questions
Are there still option topics?
No. The current guide has no options — some of their content moved into the core, especially at HL.
What does HL add?
Additional depth across the same Structure and Reactivity topics — for example entropy and spontaneity, and further mechanisms.
