Which works are studied in 9.º ano

Annex 1 of the 9.º ano Aprendizagens Essenciais lists the works and texts of Literary Education. The core ones are:

  • Luís de Camões, Os Lusíadas — episodes and stanzas from cantos I, III, IV, V, VI, IX and X (among them the Proposição, Inês de Castro and the Adamastor).
  • Gil Vicente, Auto da Barca do Inferno or the farce Auto da Índia.
  • Narratives by Portuguese authors (for example Eça de Queirós, Camilo Castelo Branco, Vergílio Ferreira) and crónicas (Maria Judite de Carvalho, António Lobo Antunes).
  • Narratives by authors from Portuguese-speaking countries and by foreign authors.

9.º ano Grammar includes, among others, phonological processes, archaisms and neologisms, analysis of simple and complex sentences (syntactic functions, dividing and classifying clauses), proclisis and mesoclisis, aspect and modality. The prova can also use 7.º and 8.º ano grammar.

How to prepare

  1. Know Os Lusíadas and the Gil Vicente play studied in class well: what each episode is about, the characters and the satirical intent.
  2. Practise reading non-literary texts (popular science, critical reviews, comment) with comprehension questions.
  3. Consolidate syntactic functions and clause classification, which come from 7.º and 8.º ano.
  4. Write opinion texts, comments and short expositions on the works, with planning and revision.
  5. Work through past provas finais with their marking criteria — and, since the prova is digital, practise writing and revising on a computer too.
